For more than a century the Basque Country or Euskadi (Autonomous Community located in the North of Spain with political powers similar to a German Land or a USA State) has been one of the most powerful and diversified industrial areas of Spain. From the industrial revolution with the profitable trade of iron ore for coal with Britain to the successful restructuring of the mining, steel and naval industry during the 80s and 90s the Basque Country has shown its economic capacity and thriving vitality which had turned the area into one of the main financial centres of the Atlantic Axis. Without forgetting its industrial past the Basque Country has experienced deep changes embracing high technology sectors and fostering the innovation of the future to offer products of high added value to its society and to the world.

The Basques enjoy a good quality of life, the figures speak by themselves.
The United Nations Human Development Index gives to the Basque Country the highest HDI (along with Navarra) within Spain which is per se included in the HDI top 25 out of 182 countries.
The good Basque results in the HDI report are due in part to its robust Welfare State of which we can give some brief examples: A long life expectancy of 82, 1 years, a medical ratio of 524,1 doctors per 100.000 inhabitants, more than 51% homes with internet access or an expenditure on education of 4,6% of the GDP.
This Welfare State combined with Fiscal Autonomy (economic devolved powers enshrined in the constitution) and a solid financial system (the best credit rating out of 17 autonomous communities levelled with France) enables the region to face the coming global economic challenges with favourable expectations.
